Before enrolling in the SMU-SID Directorship Programme, I was already in the Chairman’s position in the State Trading Organization (STO), Maldives. I have significant experience in my industry and have served on various other organisations, committees, and advisory boards. However, I recognised that to progress further in my career and contribute more effectively at a strategic level, I needed to enhance my understanding of governance principles and boardroom dynamics.
Several factors prompted me to take up the SMU-SID Directorship Programme. Firstly, I observed a growing emphasis on governance and board leadership within my industry, and I wanted to position myself as a more effective leader in this regard. Secondly, I recognised that the challenges facing organisations today are becoming increasingly complex, requiring directors to possess a diverse skill set and strategic mindset. Lastly, I saw the programme as an opportunity to expand my professional network and learn from industry experts and peers facing similar challenges.
As a result of the course, I implemented several changes in my approach to leadership and decision-making. I became more adept at evaluating strategic opportunities and risks, leveraging governance frameworks to guide my decision-making process. Additionally, I enhanced my communication skills, learning how to effectively engage with board members, management, and stakeholders to drive consensus and alignment around key initiatives. Moreover, the programme emphasised the importance of continuous learning and staying abreast of emerging trends and best practices, prompting me to adopt a more proactive approach to professional development.
The end result of completing the SMU-SID Directorship Programme has been highly beneficial both professionally and personally. Professionally, I have gained the confidence and competence to contribute more effectively as a director, bringing a strategic perspective to boardroom discussions and decision-making processes. I have also expanded my professional network, forging relationships with industry peers and experts that continue to enrich my professional journey. Personally, the programme has deepened my understanding of governance principles and ethical leadership, instilling a sense of responsibility and accountability in my approach to leadership roles.
