From Ideas to Enterprise Value: How NYK and SMU Are Cultivating Business Leaders as Catalysts for Innovation
Customised Programme with NYK Group to cultivate future-ready leaders

The Challenge
As one of the world's leading maritime companies, NYK Group operates in an industry undergoing profound transformation. Digital disruption, decarbonisation pressures, shifting customer expectations and increasingly complex global supply chains are redefining the rules of competition.
In such an environment, sustaining success requires more than operational excellence. It calls for leaders who can navigate uncertainty, challenge conventional thinking and identify new opportunities for growth.
Recognising this imperative, NYK sought to develop a new generation of business leaders who could move beyond managing today's operations to creating tomorrow's value. While ideas existed throughout the organisation, they were often fragmented, difficult to validate and even harder to translate into viable business opportunities. The challenge was not simply to innovate, but to build an organisational capability that could repeatedly transform ideas into meaningful business outcomes.
To achieve this, NYK established the NYK Digital Academy, an in-house platform that goes beyond conventional leadership development, designed to cultivate entrepreneurial thinking and empower employees across the Group to become catalysts for innovation.

The Solution
To bring this vision to life, NYK partnered with SMU Executive Development (ExD) as a learning collaborator in the Academy's innovation journey.
Rather than focusing solely on frameworks and theories, the programme immerses participants in the realities of innovation through hands-on experimentation, customer engagement and rapid iteration.
Intensive Design Thinking Bootcamp: One of the programme's signature experiences held at SMU's city campus in Singapore. Bringing together participants from different business units, countries and professional backgrounds, the bootcamp creates a unique environment where diverse perspectives collide. Participants work in multicultural teams to tackle meaningful challenges, identify unmet needs and develop solutions that have the potential to create new value.
A learning experience that deliberately pushes participants out of their comfort zones: Instead of remaining in the classroom, teams venture into the city to conduct interviews with strangers, uncover hidden customer insights and challenge their own assumptions. Guided by the principles of design thinking, participants empathise with users, define problems, generate ideas, build prototypes and test their concepts in rapid cycles.
Through this process, innovation becomes more than a concept. It becomes an experience.
Complementing the experiential activities are sessions led by SMU faculty members and industry practitioners, exposing participants to diverse perspectives on innovation, leadership and emerging business trends.
Throughout the journey, participants receive structured guidance and feedback to strengthen both the feasibility and impact of their ideas.
The Impact
The NYK Digital Academy was designed not only to equip employees with innovation tools, but also to shape mindsets.
Participants learn to embrace ambiguity, make decisions without the comfort of precedent and persevere through experimentation. They become more confident in navigating unfamiliar situations, collaborating across functions and taking ownership of new ideas.
This reflects NYK's broader aspiration of developing leaders who are prepared to act with conviction in a rapidly changing world.

"In an era of increasing uncertainty, continuous creation of new businesses is essential for companies to achieve sustainable growth.
The NYK Digital Academy was established as a practical programme that integrates talent development with new business creation, with the aim of enhancing employees’ ability to create value for NYK Group."
— Mr. Kei Yuhara, General Manager of Innovation Promotion Group of NYK
The programme's impact extends beyond individual capability building.
Ideas generated through the Academy have progressed into internal innovation pipelines, informing new service offerings, operational improvements and adjacent business opportunities beyond NYK's traditional maritime operations.
Several initiatives have advanced towards implementation, demonstrating the Academy's ability to bridge the gap between learning and execution. By empowering employees to take ownership of ideas from concept to validation, NYK has strengthened its capacity to convert innovation into enterprise value.
What began as a leadership development initiative has evolved into a systematic approach for generating, testing and advancing ideas with commercial potential.
Another defining outcome has been the strengthening of collaboration across the NYK Group.
Participants work alongside colleagues from different functions, geographies and subsidiaries, fostering relationships that transcend organisational boundaries. They also engage with faculty members, industry experts and external stakeholders, ensuring that ideas are shaped by real-world constraints and opportunities rather than developed in isolation.
The result is an innovation ecosystem built on diverse perspectives, disciplined experimentation and shared ownership.
Beyond generating new ideas, the programme has helped embed a common language and approach to innovation across the organisation — reinforcing a culture where curiosity, collaboration and action are valued.

Looking Ahead
For NYK, the partnership with SMU ExD was never intended to be a one-off training intervention. It was a strategic investment in people and in the organisation's future.
By equipping employees with the confidence to experiment, the discipline to validate ideas and the courage to act amid uncertainty, the NYK Digital Academy continues to strengthen NYK Group's ability to create value beyond its traditional boundaries.
In an era defined by constant disruption, one of the most important competitive advantages may not be found in technology alone, but in people who are willing and equipped to imagine and build what comes next.
